In the autumn of 2014 we will start building the 3rd phase of the New Horizon School. This will include a new kitchen for the school and housing for some of the teachers.
A new school year started at the end of January. This year the New Horizon School has 135 pupils in 1st to 5th grade. They are now deeply focused on cracking the codes of the alphabet and numbers. The start of the new school year also included the opening of two new buildings: A classroom for 5th grade and offices for the principal and teachers.

Every school in Uganda serves at least one warm meal to their pupils during the course of the day. The menu is generally the same all around the country. During a fairly long recess at 10:30 the pupils get a cup of maize porridge. The 1st and 2nd graders end their day at 13:00 hours, at the same time as the pupils in 3rd grade and above have their lunch. This meal will consist of poscho (made of corn flour) and boiled, brown beans. Vegetables, if available, will be added to give extra flavor.
Whether a pupil receives this warm meal during a day at school will at most schools depend on if their parents have paid for it or not. Many children can therefore go an entire day without food. We know that the body needs “fuel” to be able to concentrate and to perform at our best. That is why every pupil at New Horizon receives the meals prepared in our kitchen. Maybe a new kitchen will inspire the cook to vary the meals served and focus on the nutrient contents of the food?
To be able to attract good teachers it is necessary for the foundation to offer housing, or what we in Norway would call a bedsit. Nyenga Children’s Home already has housing for some of the organization’s employees, but there is a need for more. Having employees staying on the school property also reduces the risk of thefts when school is out for the evening.
The last step in the building process at New Horizon will result in a podium at the bottom of a slope. The slope will function as a stand for the audience. Hopefully the podium will be an inspiration for creative activities both by the pupils at the school and for people in the village.
